عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ١

[80:1] He frowned and turned away,-

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ٢

[80:2] as the blind man approached him.

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ٣

[80:3] And how do you know? He could have purified himself.

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ٤

[80:4] Or he could have taken heed and benefited from the reminder.

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ٥

[80:5] However, as for the one who was rich,-

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ٦

[80:6] -you gave him all your attention.

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ٧

[80:7] While, you could have not done anything to purify him.

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ٨

[80:8] But as for the one who came to you eagerly,-

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ٩

[80:9] -and was reverent,-

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ١٠

[80:10] -you did not pay any attention.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌۭ١١

[80:11] Absolutely, this is indeed a reminder.

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ١٢

[80:12] Therefore let those who will, take heed.

فِى صُحُفٍۢ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ١٣

[80:13] In an honorable record.

مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ١٤

[80:14] Exalted and pure.

بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍۢ١٥

[80:15] Delivered by the hands of travelers.

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍۢ١٦

[80:16] Honorable and righteous.

قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ١٧

[80:17] Woe to the human being, what made him lose faith?

مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ١٨

[80:18] From what has He created him?

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ١٩

[80:19] He created him from semen; He created him then exactly measured him.

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ٢٠

[80:20] He then made his task easy.

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ٢١

[80:21] Then He put him to death and buried him in the grave.

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ٢٢

[80:22] Then, when He wills, He will resurrect him.

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ٢٣

[80:23] Absolutely, he shall never break His commandments.

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ٢٤

[80:24] Therefore let the human being look at his food.

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّۭا٢٥

[80:25] Indeed We pour the water generously.

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّۭا٢٦

[80:26] We then split the ground with cracks.

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّۭا٢٧

[80:27] We then grow therein grains,-

وَعِنَبًۭا وَقَضْبًۭا٢٨

[80:28] -and grapes and pastures,-

وَزَيْتُونًۭا وَنَخْلًۭا٢٩

[80:29] -and olives and dates,-

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًۭا٣٠

[80:30] -and dense orchards,-

وَفَٰكِهَةًۭ وَأَبًّۭا٣١

[80:31] -and fruits, all at his disposal.

مَّتَٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ٣٢

[80:32] All are provisions for you as well as your livestock.

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ٣٣

[80:33] Then when the loud strike comes to pass.

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ٣٤

[80:34] That will be the day when man will flee from his brother-

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ٣٥

[80:35] -and from his mother and his father,-

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ٣٦

[80:36] -and from his wife and his children.

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ شَأْنٌۭ يُغْنِيهِ٣٧

[80:37] Each one of them on that day will worry about his own neck.

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ٣٨

[80:38] Some faces on that day will be radiating,-

ضَاحِكَةٌۭ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ٣٩

[80:39] -laughing, rejoicing.

وَوُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۭ٤٠

[80:40] And other faces on that day will be dull.

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ٤١

[80:41] Their stinginess will shine through.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ٤٢

[80:42] These are the unfaithful, the evildoers.
