لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ١

[90:1] I swear by this town-

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ٢

[90:2] -and you, a resident of this town,-

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ٣

[90:3] -and the parent and child.

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ٤

[90:4] We have certainly created the human being to go through hardship.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ٥

[90:5] Does he think that no one has any power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا٦

[90:6] He boasts that I have spent so much money.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ٧

[90:7] Does he think that no one can see him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ٨

[90:8] Did We not create for him two eyes-

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ٩

[90:9] -and a tongue, and two lips-

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ١٠

[90:10] -and showed him the two paths?

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ١١

[90:11] He should therefore choose the difficult one.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ١٢

[90:12] And do you know what the difficult one is?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ١٣

[90:13] Freeing the slaves.

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ١٤

[90:14] Or feeding someone even during hard times,-

يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ١٥

[90:15] -a fatherless who is close by,-

أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ١٦

[90:16] -or a needy who is homeless,-

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ١٧

[90:17] then if he is one of those who had attained faith, and enjoins others to patience, and enjoins others to kindness,-

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ١٨

[90:18] -these will be the dwellers of the bliss.

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ١٩

[90:19] As for those who reject Our signs, they will be the dwellers of misery.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ٢٠

[90:20] They will be surrounded by Fire.
